Barry Golay

Golay, Barry Richard, April 13, 1964 – November 30, 2017 passed away peacefully at the Kamsack Hospital, aged 53 with family at his side.

Barry was born in Kamsack to parents Richard Henry and Joyce Marie (nee Green).  He was joined by a brother Mitchell Chad in August, 1973. 

Raised on the Green homestead property north of Veregin, his father passed away when he was 9.  Fortunately, they shared the yard with his mother’s Brother Gerald Green and his family.  They soon became strongly bonded as extended family.  He also had support from his grandmother Elvina.

Between schooling in Veregin and then Kamsack, Barry helped with the farm duties, but also gained skills values, and interests for the outdoors.  Fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, quadding became core recreational activities with Barry that he would not only carry to his last day, but also pass down to the younger generations of relatives that followed.  Almost every family member can say they’ve been in a boat or shoreside with Barry.  Catching the fish was always a bonus; spending time and passing skills was the main focus.

As mentioned, Barry’s career began as a farming assistant in the area.  He then became a dedicated employee in civil construction with Broda Construction.  The company really looked after him, and he showed his appreciation.  But Barry looked at expanding his abilities to a more trades-based career, obtaining welding, scuba, parts-management and even his Explosives-certification trades.  He eventually settled into employment with CP rail in maintenance.

Barry became heavily involved in the communities he lived in.  His volunteer firefighting proceeded for 25 years, being recognized by the Governor General for his dedication and achievements.  The local Wildlife banquets were never to be missed, and his involvement with the group was a regular thing.  His love of snowmobiling really complimented his involvement with the Snow Drifters since the 1980’s.  Barry was a member of the 4-H as a teen, and continued this love with involvement with the Rodeo and Penning groups.  Later on he found a niche with the Legion and was welcomed with open arms; only to return extensive volunteering and participation in their numerous programs.

Barry will be sadly missed by his brother Mitchell (Amy), their son (Barry’s nephew) Logan and soon-to-be-born second boy.  Additionally, surviving cousins Wendy (Darren), Bonnie (Larry), Leanne (Allen), Scott (Rhonda), Jack (Heather) & Sarah (Scott), and Uncle Barry’s extended-nieces & extended-nephews Brendan, Ian, Joel (Ashley), Blake, Vaughn, Eli, Keanna, Sydney and Cole, that he held dear to his heart and always seemed happiest when he got to spend time with them.  And lastly, a large population of the communities he consistently and enthusiastically helped in.

Funeral Service was held December 8, 2017 from Westminister Memorial United Church – Kamsack, with Rev. Kevin Sprong officiating. Royal Canadian Legion – Kamsack Branch served as honor guard.
