Shostal, Evelyn, October 8, 1919 – June 30, 2016, aged 96 years.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt who passed away peacefully at the Kamsack Hospital.

Evelyn was born to Mike and Kate Sochan at the family homestead which was located 4 miles north of Hazel Dell, Saskatchewan. In 1929, Evelyn's family moved to a farmstead near Kelvington, Saskatchewan, where Evelyn attended Brand School. In her early 20's, Evelyn moved to Stenen, Saskatchewan in order to find work. Here she met her future husband Alex, whom she married on July 28, 1940 at Onaschuk Church which was located northwest of Hyas, Saskatchewan. After marrying Alex, she helped to raise her family (two boys), while helping Alex run the family farm which was located 3 miles east of Stenen. In 1954, the family moved to Kamsack, Saskatchewan, where her husband Alex took over management as the elevator agent for the United Grain Growers Company.

In addition to her domestic housekeeping duties, Evelyn worked part time at the Kamsack Union Hospital as a housekeeper and in later years, as a matron at the Kamsack RCMP detachment for a number of years until her retirement.

Evelyn loved to play practical jokes and tell stories of the old days. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her tasty Ukrainian dishes, which her family thoroughly enjoyed. Evelyn was an avid golfer and spent many weekends attending various tournaments in the Kamsack area with her golf buddies.

Evelyn will be fondly remembered as an upbeat, easy going person who did everything she could to make people feel welcome. She never complained about any of life's obstacles placed in her way, she just carried on and persevered. She was a gentle person who cared, a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all those who were touched by her cheerful personality.

Evelyn is survived by her son Eugene and daughter-in-law Bev, son Julian and daughter-in-law Suzanne, grandchildren Lori, Christy, Lindsay and Lauren as well as great grandchildren Zachary, Shannon, Owen and Ella. She also leaves to mourn other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Alex of 72 years, her parents Mike and Kate Sochan, her sisters Nettie Skawronski, Anne Morden as well as her brothers Bill, Walter, Roy and Harold.

If friends so wish, they may make memorial donations to Eaglestone Personal Care Home, Box 1330, Kamsack, Sk. SOA 1SO. Letters of condolence for the family may be left by visiting Wolkowski.ca.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.
