Gerald Green

  Gerald was born in Kamsack Saskatchewan to Ralph and Elvina (Hellegards) Green. He attended school at Pretty View then Kamsack. Gerald left school in grade 9 to help with the family farm north of Veregin. He spent one year travelling Australia and New Zealand which his family and friends heard many stories about. Upon coming back to Canada he spent time with his best friend “Hoobie” in Calgary. There he met the love of his life Betty Purcell. Gerald and Betty were married November 13th, 1965 in Kamsack. They moved back to Kamsack to farm. They lived in Kamsack for a short time and then moved a ¼ mile from his parent’s farm, until the tragic death of his dad. Dad and Mom then moved onto the family homestead where they lived until their passing. They were blessed with four children Wendy, Bonnie, Leanne and Scott. Dad also had two nephews in which he was a father figure to and treated as his own, Barry and Mitch Golay. Dad spent most of his life farming but also had a real passion for truck driving, hauling logs in Manitoba and water on the oil rigs. Coffee was always on at Gerald’s and you were always welcome, as long as you could listen to his stories. Dad and Scott then started their own trucking business which filled his heart with pride and joy! His favourite thing about trucking was hauling bales to the different farmers and meeting new people. Those that knew dad know that he was a social butterfly. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and we mean anyone!

  Dad also had a great passion for camping, fishing and hunting, He would pack up camper, boat, motor and oh yeah all the kids, 6 in total plus his mom and off we would go to Townsend Lake. Mom would be dancing on the door step and smiling “have fun please don’t hurry back”. In the fall would be duck hunting and deer hunting. Dad always had one of the kids or a friend with him. Dad also hosted, every Boxing Day, a gathering in our garage for snowmobilers to stop in, sit down and split a watermelon. Visiting with friends and family were very important to dad. Summer Saturday nights meant family, friends and neighbours gathering for shishliki, the neighbourhood band, a whole lot of singing and visiting. We celebrated dad’s 75thbirthday last July with family, friends and neighbours like old times. Shishliki, music and visiting. We were so happy so many were able to attend. Dad was so excited to win supper in the field last fall. We are sure he phoned everyone on his phone list and more. Dad was overjoyed at the birth of each of his grandchildren. Brendan, Joel, Ian, Keanna, Blake, Sydney and Cole. He was always happy to have a visit with them, sure to slip them cash but “flicking” the bills so they didn’t get two.

  Gerald is predeceased by his parents; Ralph and Elvina, wife Betty and sister Betty. Survived by his one son Scott (Rhonda), three daughters Wendy (Darren) Fedorchuk, Bonnie (Larry) Kontek, Leanne Romaniuk, one sister Joyce Golay and seven grandchildren. He will be missed by all, especially his coffee friends.

  Funeral Services were held Thursday, June 25, 2015 from Westminster United Church – Kamsack, with Rev. Marg Janick Greyston officiating. Interment followed at the Riverview Cemetery.
