Fred Vanin Obituary

Frederick (Fred, Freddy) George Vanin was born on May 13th, 1960 in Benito, MB to Lawrence and Pauline (nee Kasakoff) Vanin. He was the third of five children. Fred grew up north of Pelly on the family farm which they shared a yard with his grandparents Fred and Helen Vanin until his grandparents moved to Pelly in 1975.
Growing up in a family of seven during that time was very difficult and things were not easy, Fred attended school in Pelly till Grade 8 when he decided that working was more important then school, to help his family out. He did odd jobs around the area that included: working on the family farm, working at a saw mill with his dad and Norman Leadbeater, helping build Pelly Skating Rink, and even tried the Alberta Oil fields for a short time.
In 1979, he married his wife Lyla Leadbeater and moved to Yorkton to take his welding at Yorkton Regional, after completing that he got a job at Morris in Yorkton and worked there for 3 years. In May of 1980, they had their first child, a daughter Tammy. They eventually returned to Pelly and Fred went back to working for a local farmer. A year after moving back to Pelly Fred and Lyla purchased a truck and Cat and started their own business FLT Feedlot Cleaning that he ran for two years. After selling his feedlot cleaning business, Fred got a job as a grain buyer at the Pioneer in Pelly and when the elevator in Pelly closed he went to the Pioneer in Norquay.  In October of 1985, their second child a son, Evan was born.
Fred loved the farming life and spent many hours out at the family farm helping his parents. In 1990, Fred and Lyla decided to purchase the Vanin family farm from Lawrence and Pauline, in the fall they moved out to the farm north of Pelly to continue to raise their family and they still live out there with their daughter and grandson (Dawson). While living on the farm Fred grain farmed and raised cattle in 1999, they decided to sell their cattle but continued to grain farm. In 2001, purchased their first group of bison calves which they raised for the winter and sold in the spring, they did this for two years and then decided to return to cattle and purchased a small herd that they kept till the fall of 2012.
In 1992, Fred started working for Norquay Alfalfa Plant and remained there till 2004. From 2004-2008 Fred had several different jobs he hauled logs during the winter by Hudson Bay, worked at Big Sky pig barn by Pelly and worked for Cherewyk Backhoe Services.
In 2008, Fred was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that left him unable to do a lot of things and he had to stop working and farming. He was able to keep his cows for four years after his diagnosis with the help of his wife and family, at that point he decided to sell his herd and rent out the pasture. That was a better deal he could go out and check them on a daily basis during the summer and then come fall they left for the winter and no one had to worry about feeding cows when it was 30 below or getting up in the middle of the night checking for calves being born. In the spring of 2017, Fred was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had a kidney removed and in the fall of the same year it was discovered that the cancer had spread to his spine which left him paralyzed from the middle of his chest down. In August of 2018, it was discovered that his cancer had spread again and this time it was in his lungs he spent four weeks in Kamsack Hospital and on September 15th 2018, while surrounded by those that loved him and as the sunset on the first day of hunting season, Fred took his last breath and left this world.
Fred has four amazing grandchildren, Dawson (13), Kasey (5), Ally (4) and Aubree (4 months). He adored his grandchildren, he enjoyed having them all over for sleepovers, giving them rides in his side by side, pulling them in the sleigh behind the quad and of course curling up on the couch to watch a movie and eat chips.
Fred loved farming, his farm meant the world to him. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, quadding, ski-dooing, spending time with his family and friends, and going for morning coffee to catch up on all the local gossip.
Fred leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Lyla, daughter Tammy her son Dawson, son Evan his wife Kaley (Severson) their three children Kasey, Ally, and Aubree. Fred also leaves his sister Lori Dennis, brother Larry (Audrey) Vanin, sister Barbara Reminek, and sister Anita (Scott) Brown, his sister in law Pat (Miles) Prokipchuk, sister in law Linda (George) Russell also many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and cherished friends.  Fred is predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Pauline Vanin and brother in law Reg Reminek.
