Obituary: Anne Elizabeth Makowsky (Baba)
Anne Elizabeth, also known as Mom, Aunt, Baba, and Pra-Baba, was born to Micheal and Lillian Labinowicz on June 27, 1928 at their farm near Mikado, SK.
Anne was their only daughter. Her older brother Eugene was 9 years older, and her younger brother Lawrence was 16 years younger. Consequently, Anne’s main companions growing up were the dogs, cats, and horses on the farm which she loved. She also attended many barn dances with her numerous cousins, uncles, and aunts, all who lived nearby.
It was at one of these dances that she met a handsome saxophonist, Nick Makowsky, who played in the band. Anne and Nick were married on August 12, 1950 in Canora, SK.
They lived on the Makowsky farm near Dneiper, SK for a few years before moving into Kamsack where Nick found employment with numerous businesses. Anne soon became a mom with the birth of her first child Beverly and then followed by Daniel, Norman, and Connie. She took her job as a mother seriously, teaching the importance of family and faith and dressing well. Meals were always taken seriously, with substantial food lovingly prepared for her family to enjoy. She was a great cook, but she excelled as a baker. She loved making pies, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren often talk about the doughnuts she made for them whenever she visited!
Anne was a homemaker for most of her married life. She was always where she needed to be – she was “the wind beneath the wings” of her children, enabling their accomplishments. She attended music recitals, ball games, church concerts, and wrestling matches. She dropped everything to babysit the grandchildren (and family cats) whenever she was asked. She loved all her children, grandchildren, their spouses, and her great-grandchildren unconditionally.
Anne’s faith was also integral to how she lived. She was an active member of St. Josephat’s Parish. As a UCWL member for 70 years, she spent countless hours making perogies and noodles, helping cater banquets, and providing baking. For a number of years she also cleaned the church and baked communion bread.
Nick died in July of 2000, just weeks prior to their 50th wedding anniversary. While saddened by his passing, Anne didn’t let it slow her down for long. She filled her days by spending more time with the grandchildren, reading countless books, expanding and tending the flower beds in her yard, and caring for her cat Sparky. And of course, by baking – her freezer was never without tasty treats! She remained in her home until she was 94.
In October 2022, declining health forced Anne to move to the Kamsack and District Nursing Home, where her sharp-mind allowed her to remain busy by reading books, completing puzzles, and participating in activities.
The nursing home is where Anne peacefully passed away on Sunday August 31. She is predeceased by her husband Nick Makowsky, infant son Daniel Makowsky, daughter Beverly Baylis, son-in-law Jim Baylis, her parents Micheal and Lillian Labinowicz, as well as her brothers Eugene and Lawrence Labinowicz and their spouses. She leaves to mourn her son Norman (Lorraine) Makowsky, daughter Connie (Ken) Achtymichuk, grandchildren Stephen (Ashley) Baylis and Gabrielle Achtymichuk, and great-grandchildren Noah and Hannah Baylis.
“Heaven rejoices to a life well lived! Well done my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
