ACHTYMICHUK: Charles Edwin,  Mar. 14, 1932 - Sept. 6, 2024    Age 92 years

Charlie Achtymichuk, the third of four sons, was born to William D. Achtymichuk and Mary (nee Polischuk) on March 14, 1932.  Their farm was located approximately ten miles south of Kamsack.  His early education was at the one room McGillivray School.  His love of baseball began in the Stoney Creek district.  His high school years were spent in Kamsack where, in 1950, he graduated from grade 12.  While attending school in Kamsack he continued playing baseball, first with the Kamsack Kolts and later with the Kamsack Cyclones.  Charlie’s start in the automotive trade began at Allan Motors, the General Motors dealership in Kamsack.  On June 3, 1953, Charlie married Kathleen Zeiben in the United Church.  That same year they moved to Ontario in search of advanced employment within the automotive sector which he found in Toronto.  Charlie and Kaye had a son, Kenneth, on March 5, 1954.  Two years later Charlie moved his family back to Kamsack to operate a franchised auto repair shop which eventually became Garden City Motors Ltd., the new G.M. car dealership for the town.   Charlie enjoyed selling cars.  One memorable “deal” came about in 1962 when Charlie took a Duck Mountain Provincial Park cabin in trade for a new car sale.  “Just-A-Madge-Inn” was named and became a summer gathering place for family and friends.  On March 11, 1963 Charlie and Kaye’s second son, Dale was born.  Charlie was active in the Kamsack community as a member of the Elks and later as a Mason.  With his baseball days behind him he spent time coaching and umping baseball for his sons. He played golf in the summer and skied in the winter.  Once he experienced skiing in the mountains, annual family ski trips followed, with trips to Jasper, Banff and other spots in the Rockies.  Curling was also a passion for Charlie and he had occasion to reach the provincial brier play downs.  Charlie and Kaye were founding members of the annual Duck Mountain cross country skiing loppet, an event that he and Kaye continued to volunteer at for many years.

Charlie operated the automotive dealership until 1982 when he decided to discontinue as a dealer due to health reasons.  He continued as a car salesman, commuting to Yorkton before retiring in 1987.

Card playing with friends and family was another pastime he enjoyed. He taught his grandchildren how to play 65 cent rummy.   Charlie and Kaye enjoyed Bridge and were regulars of the Kamsack Bridge Club for many years.

On Sept. 6, 2024 Charlie passed away peacefully at the Kamsack Nursing Home, with his loving wife of 71 years at his bedside. Charlie is survived by his wife Kaye, his sons, Ken (Connie) in Outlook and granddaughter Gabrielle (Saskatoon). Son, Dale (Renee) in Wadena and grandsons Brynn (North Battleford) and Kory (Swift Current).  He is also survived by his sisters in law, Lorraine Achtymichuk, Olga Zbeetnoff, Pauline Harling as well as many nieces and nephews.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents (William & Mary), parents-in-law, John and Mabel Zeiben, and by his three brothers, Richard, Fred, Stanley and sisters-in-law, Eileen Achtymichuk, Lois Achtymichuk, Jean Zeiben and brothers-in-law, Ron Harling, Alec Zbeetnoff, Nick Zeiben, John Zeiben and Tom Zeiben.

A private family funeral will be held at a later date.
