Eileen Auguston Obituary

Eileen “Shirley” Augustson (nee Mitchell), 85, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2023 at Canora, Saskatchewan. Shirley was born in Swan River Municipality on October 26, 1937 to Harold Mitchell and Violet Toivonen (nee Huffman). She attended grade school in Swan River and moved to Flin Flon with her family in the 1940s. She married Roger Augustson and raised her family in the north and then back in the Valley. She met Lawrence Chernoff later in life and they made their home at Veregin, Saskatchewan. Shirley was a pistol. She said what she really thought, which sometimes got her in hot water, but you never had to worry where you stood with her. She was an adventurous person and would have loved to travel the world if she’d had the chance. She loved gardening and playing cards and spending time with children, especially her grandchildren. She loved some fully and desperately and perhaps more than they deserved, but love is always unequal, and what brings us joy also brings pain. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Jim (Grace), Les (Ruby), and Sherman (Leila), her sisters Dilly Stillborn (John), Marj Patterson (Elwood), Vera Magill (Stanley), Audrey Collinson (Bob), and Olive Wadin (Eric), her partner Lawrence, and her son, Robert. She is survived by her remaining children; Dennis Mitchell, Donna Covic (Nick), Darryl Mitchell, Rhonda Porter, and Rhena Musqua (George), and by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley’s fondest memories of childhood were that, in the coldest nights, she would crawl in at her daddy’s feet, wrap herself around them, and they would keep each other warm. So in accordance with Shirley’s wishes, she was cremated and her ashes were laid at Birchwood Cemetery at the feet of her father, Harold Gilbert Mitchell. A graveside service was held with family and close friends on June 30, 2023.
