Eugene Kalanchey Obituary

Eugene John Kalanchey

July 13, 1948 ~ January 17, 2026 (age 77)

With deep sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of Eugene John Kalanchey on January 17, 2026, at Yorkton Hospital. He left this world surrounded by his daughter Debbie and his granddaughters Jenna and Tyra by his side. Eugene married Ethel Gustavson at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Arran on October 11, 1969. And together they shared 49 years of marriage and welcomed 3 daughters, Christine, Debbie, and Susan. They meant the world to him. After getting married, they moved to Winnipeg, where Eugene started working for George Smith Trucking as a delivery driver picking up hanging meat from the Slaughter House District in Winnipeg.

In 1977, Eugene had the opportunity to move back to the farm by Arran. He farmed with his dad, growing crops and raising cattle. Eugene continued his trucking career with George Smith Trucking, hauling shipping containers across Canada from Winnipeg to Vancouver and back. He taught his daughters how to work on the farm. From milking cows, hauling and pitching bales, and picking rocks in the field by hand. That hard work instilled a solid work ethic in his daughters. He continued trucking, working for his neighbours, Tom and Lamar Koehn, with whom he became close friends. He made many good memories with them and even became known as Uncle Gene to the Koehn Families. He enjoyed his visits with his sister-in-law, Lila, and her husband, Richard, who visited throughout the year from Saskatoon.

Eugene loved spending time with his Granddaughters, Tyra and Jenna.  He loved listening to their stories and playing cards with them. He was an excellent card player, he was always winning and knew the scores before anyone else tallied it at the table. One of his fond memories is taking Tyra and Jenna on a skiing trip to Duck Mountain. One of his favourite activities was driving around the area. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching curling, wrestling and listening to stories. He enjoyed going to the ice cream store at Madge Lake and attending the Verigin Shishliki BBQ with his family.

Eugene will be sadly missed by his family: Christine, (Darryl), Chloe Michayluk; Debbie, (Quinn), Tyra, Jenna Zander; Susan, (Vernon), Blaize, Isaac Nedilenka; sister-in-law, Lila, (Richard) Yagelnesky. He is predeceased by his wife, Ethel Kalanchey (49 years), and his parents, John and Nellie Kalanchey.

We will miss you forever; you will always live in our hearts.
