Florence Kazakoff Obituary

A Memorial Service will be held in the summer of 2021.

Kazakoff, Florence – December 14, 1929 – December 27, 2020. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandma (baba) and great-grandma at the age of 91.  She passed away at the Kamsack Union Hospital after a short illness.

Florence was born on the family farm south of Veregin. She was the second child of Nikifor and Vera Shukin (nee Reibin)

Florence attended Veregin School to grade 8. Then she was expected to quit school like most other students in her day, to help out on the family farm.  Florence came from a Doukhobor family, who believed in the Toil and Peaceful Life precept, especially the toil part.

In 1948, Florence married her neighbour, Peter F. Popoff, and they took up residence on his grandparent’s homestead, where they farmed, looked after their 4 children and Peter’s grandparents.

After Peter's sudden passing at a young age in 1976 and later a tragic fire that destroyed all the buildings on the farm that same year, she rebuilt and then later married Jack Kazakoff. They continued farming with the boys until retiring to Veregin.  After Jack's passing in 2012, she remained in Veregin until last year when her health started to fail, then moving into Eaglestone Lodge in Kamsack.

Mother was a very kind soft-spoken woman with a heart of gold and a knack for one-liners.  She took pride in her large gardens, beautiful flowers but mostly in her family.  She also enjoyed knitting and a good game of Rummy with old friends.  When you came for a visit, you would be sure not to leave hungry as she would keep putting more food on the table. She loved to bake and cook.  A typical Sunday usually meant watching a Roughrider game and every curling event possible.

She is survived by her daughters; Irene (Eugene) Beck, Nadia (Barry) Reibin, son; Robert (Tammy) Popoff; grandchildren; Sheldon (Tricia) and Trent Koenigbaur, Nathan (Trina) and Nola Beck, Karissa (Landon) Popoff, great-grandchildren, Owen and Tia, Farren and Rachelle and Paisley,  special sisters-in-law, Sonia Shukin and Florence Bodnarchuk as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Florence is predeceased by her parents, Nikifor and Vera; husbands, Peter Popoff and Jack Kazakoff, son, Gary, daughter-in-law, Jeannine, granddaughter, Mackenzie; sisters and spouses, Laura (Sam) Kazakoff, Violet (Mike) Nemanishen and by brother; George Shukin.

Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Florence, to Veregin New Horizons, Box 96, Veregin, Sk., SOA 4HO. Due to pandemic restrictions, a celebration of Florence's life will be held later this summer with interment in Veregin Cemetery.
