Ellen Jane Bettinson (Nee Martin) Dec 26, 1925 Feb 5, 2022
It is with great memories and much love that we remember our Mom, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Jean Bettinson who passed away peacefully on Feb 5th, 2022.
Jean is survived by her daughters Diane (Terry) Jaques , Val (Brad 1953-1999) Vogel, grandchildren Toria (Rob), Tyra (Chris), Darcy and Creag , great grandchildren (Jaymee, Grayson, Jordyn and Darby). Jean was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1995.
Jean was born and raised in Russell, Manitoba one of 11 children and now the last family member of the Samuel and Agnes Martin clan is gone.
Jean enlisted in WWII in 1943, soon after her 18th birthday. She was accepted by the Canadian Women’s Army Core (CWAC) and chose to be a driver – everything from jeeps to big trucks. As the war was ending she met the trains in Ottawa and transported wounded soldiers to hospitals in and around that area. Jean returned to Pelly, married, and raised her children. Jean worked with her sister-in-law Gladys Gibbs at the Pelly Telephone Office from 1956 – 1972 when the Office closed. She played an active role in Pelly Legion and Pelly Lions Club.
Due to a stroke in 2008 Jean took up residency at Kamsack Nursing Home. The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff, Gals in the Activity Dept, the nursing crew that became Moms new ‘family’, and our “cousin” Linda Russell. There are not enough words to express our appreciation for everything they did for Mom these past 14 years.
Mom was in her element hosting family and friends – always making sure everyone had enough to eat and a “wee” drink. Due to Covid restrictions and the family’s wishes a private celebration of life will held at a later date. However, we ask you to “raise a glass and a smile towards the heavens” in honour of our Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
Anyone who wish to donate in memory of Jean can do so to the Fort Pelly - Fort Livingston Museum Box 217,Pelly, Sk S0A 2Z0 Tax receipts can be issued should donor wish.
