UHLOW, Peter William born June 18, 1934 – January 7, 2021 aged 86 years.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Uhlow on January 7, 2021, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Peter was born June 18, 1934 in Dubno, Ukraine to William and Tena Uhlow. After Peter and his family spent 5 years in several work camps in Germany and Poland during WWII, the three immigrated to Canada thanks to Mr. J.D. Konkin who provided sponsorship. Upon arriving in Kamsack, at the age of 14, Peter was registered in grade one as he wasn’t able to speak English but did speak Russian, German, Polish and Ukrainian. Peter quickly excelled and graduated Grade XII from the Kamsack Collegiate Institute. Afterwards he obtained a number of certifications and attended post secondary within the Plumbing and Heating trade. In 1954, he met the love of his life Joyce and married her on September 17, 1955.
Peter worked for the NPC (Northern Petroleum Company) followed by a career with a local plumbing firm. In 1969, Peter and Joyce opened P & J Plumbing and Heating, building a successful business providing services and a store front of plumbing hardware and appliances to the surrounding community. In 1988 they retired, at the age of 54. Peter's hard work ethic wouldn’t keep him in retirement mode long. He accepted a consulting role with SIAST (Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology) as an instructor, traveling to locations throughout southern Saskatchewan, instructing school maintenance staff how to care for their heating systems.
In Peter’s spare time he enjoyed the family cottage at Madge Lake (Duck Mountain Provincial Park) where he and Joyce eventually moved. There weren’t many days you wouldn’t find Peter and Joyce on the golf course. In addition to being an avid golfer, he loved to garden and spend time with family and friends, barbequing a batch of shishliki. Four years ago they moved back to Kamsack.
Peter was actively involved in the community, sitting on the Kamsack Credit Union Board of Directors for many years. Recently he was on the board of the Eaglestone Lodge. He was always willing to volunteer his time helping the United Church and others with their plumbing and heating needs. In the most recent years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed daily coffee row chat.
Peter is predeceased by his father William in 1972, mother Tena in 1987, grandson Bradley in 2005 and brother, Alex in 2019.
Peter will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 65 years Joyce, son James (Suzanne) Uhlow of Regina, SK and their daughters and grandchildren, daughter Joanne (Randy) Uhlow of Kamsack, SK, daughter Janice (Fernando) Guzzo of Edmonton, AB, grandson Zachary Handzuik of Regina, SK, Brendon Uhlow of Fort McMurray, AB, granddaughter Kayla (Ryan) Thurlow of Kamsack, SK and great granddaughters Taylor & Bexleigh Thurlow and Jordan Uhlow, Regina, SK.
Funeral Service will be held on January 12, 2021 from the chapel of Wolkowski Funeral Service, Kamsack, SK., with Gwen Reilkoff officiating. Interment followed at Riverview Cemetery, Kamsack, SK. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. The Uhlow family has set up a scholarship in Peter’s name for Kamsack Comprehensive Institute students who will be attending postsecondary education in the trades industry. Donations are being accepted at the Affinity Credit Union - Kamsack Branch. To leave a note of condolence for the family please visit wolkowski.ca.
