Lorraine Winette (nee Sansom) Barabash
July 17, 1938 - April 4, 2022 Age 83
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lorraine Winette (Sansom) Barabash, at age 83 years, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Lorraine was born in the Bear Stream District and lived her younger years on the farm near the town of Kamsack, Saskatchewan. After graduating from high school, Lorraine attended Saskatchewan Teacher’s College. Her first teaching position was in a rural schoolhouse, where she taught children across multiple grades. As a young female, she showed strength and determination in providing education to the young minds while stoking the wood stoves to keep the schoolhouse and teacherage warm in frigid Saskatchewan winters. A few years later, Lorraine secured a position as a Grade 1 teacher at Assiniboine School in Kamsack. Dozens of students passed through her classroom over the years. During the summer months Lorraine loved to travel. Along with her two sisters, or her grandparents, they drove across Canada, camping along the way.
Lorraine married Rudolph “Rudy” Barabash on July 9th, 1966. Together they raised three children in Kamsack. She retired after the birth of their son, Jonathan, but returned to education a few years later in a different capacity. She worked at Victoria School as a teacher’s aide assisting with the care of special needs children. Lorraine enjoyed teaching and learning how the students she taught, grew up.
Lorraine had many interests and hobbies including cooking, canning, gardening, sewing, crocheting, and tatting. She loved the challenge of a large, complicated jigsaw puzzle. After she retired, she also started painting, quilting, and flower arranging. She participated in the Kamsack and District Horticultural Society’s annual show for a few years and assisted in preparing the yearly gardener’s calendar. Lorraine received several first-place ribbons for her floral displays. She also won a “best of the best” ribbon for her Canada 150 theme entry in 2017.
In 2018, Lorraine and Rudy moved to Regina to be closer to their sons and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and to hear all the activities her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in.
Lorraine is survived by her son Jonathan (Yvonne); daughter Elodie Kutarna; son Leon; grandchildren Joshua and Noah Barabash, Alexis Kutarna (James Jaeger), Matthew (Agnes) Kutarna, Samantha Barabash, Cheryl Barabash; 6 great grandchildren; Cecilia and Genevieve Jaeger, and Jacob, Ambrose, Jacinta, and Augustine Kutarna; two sisters, Sandy Clarke, and Donna (Gerry Blanchette), nephews Robbie (Tammy) Clarke, Christopher Blanchette, and niece Shauna Blanchette, and several great nieces and nephews.
Lorraine is predeceased by her husband Rudy Barabash, her parents Robert W. Sansom and Bessie Winette (nee Fink) Sansom, and two brothers, Robert and Richard.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Thank you to the nurses and doctors at the Pasqua Hospital and the Regina Wascana Grace Hospice in Regina for the wonderful care they provided mom.
Those who so desire, may make memorial donations in Lorraine’s memory, to the Canadian Cancer Society (55 St Clair Avenue West, Suite 500, Toronto ON M4V 2Y7).
Lorraine will be interred at Riverview Cemetery, Kamsack and a family celebration of her life, will be held at a later date.
