Ophelia Sakundiak Obituary

Ophelia Emilia Sakundiak was born to Peter and Angela (Nellie) Andrusiak, of the Pretty View District.  She attended Pretty View School.  After leaving school she helped her parents on the farm until marrying Peter Sakundiak on October 21, 1959. Together they farmed, raising cattle, sheep and chickens. Ophelia loved gardening and plants and was happy to share her knowledge with her family and friends.

Peter and Ophelia were married for 40 years until his passing in 1999.  They enjoyed the busy life of their Pretty View neighborhood and were often found visiting their neighbors. The coffee was always on at their house too, and many card games and barbeques took place over the years. Ophelia stayed on the farm with her beloved dog, Chico until 2013, when she sold the farm and moved to Davies Towers in Kamsack. She very much enjoyed the social life in the Towers, as well as the company of her many friends in the communities of Kamsack and Veregin. She was an active member of the Hospital Auxillary and enjoyed the meetings and bake sales.  Ophelia was not blessed with children of her own but took a keen interest in the children of her sisters and neighbors. Most of them called her  "Aunty Millie". In her later years she was an honorary Baba to their children. After her sister Sylvia died tragically in 1979, Ophelia treasured the company of Sylvia’s sons Jody and Jason for many summers and they developed a close bond. She was honored to be included in their graduations and weddings. She was also welcomed at the graduations and weddings of her other nieces and nephew, and those of her honorary families.  Ophelia had a positive attitude and a phenomenal work ethic. She was often found helping the neighbors butcher chickens or get ready for a wedding or other special event. She never avoided a job to be done and was one of those rare people who didn’t mind peeling onions and potatoes for a good cause.  She managed on her own on the farm for many years, with help from her neighbors. Ophelia fought a four year battle with cancer and dealt with this burden with her typical positive attitude, even in her final months she was more focused on the people around her and not wanting to inconvenience anyone.  She passed away peacefully in the early morning of November 6th.

Ophelia was predeceased by her husband Peter, her parents, two brothers in infancy, her sister Sylvia and nephew Devin and her sister Rose.  Left to celebrate her life are her brother Michael (Betty) of Regina, nieces Sandy Turta (Danny), Denise Huska (Randal Joseph), Nicole Stefanyshyn (Richard), nephews Mark Huska (Mandy), Jason Beutler (Nicole), Jody Beutler (Lindsay) and their families, brothers in law Nick Huska and Larry Beutler.  Many neighbors and friends also mourn her passing.
