CHERNOFF, Walter Nick born April 29, 1930 – October 13, 2021 aged 91 years
Walter Nick Chernoff peacefully passed away on October 13, 2021, at the Kamsack District Nursing Home at the age of 91 years old.
Walter was born on April 29, 1930, on the farm in the Veregin District to Nick and Fanny Chernoff. He was third oldest of four siblings. He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary Strellaff, Ann Kazakoff, and Samuel Chernoff.
Walter attended Whitesand Valley school until grade eight when he then started helping on the family farm. As a young man, he spent some time working in bush camps in Ontario and at the Kamsack refinery. He enjoyed playing baseball as a pitcher and curling during the winter.
In 1952, he met and married Laura Sherstabitoff. They settled on their homestead in the Whitesand Valley where they had five children, Debbie, Ken, Maxine, Linda, and Karen. Walter tended the farm where they had cattle, horses, pigs, and chickens along with a grain farm operation. In 1978, he started farming with his son Ken where he continued to work the land on the Chernoff farm well into his 80’s. Despite not getting into the tractor anymore due to illness he still made daily trips out to the farm to check the crops, and liked having morning coffee with his crew in town.
Walter and his partner Tannis Strukoff enjoyed spending every winter in Palm Springs.
They had many friends and enjoyed their time there until illness prevented him from travelling safely down south in 2016. Walter settled into his home in Kamsack where he loved watching hockey and the Blue Jays until moving into the Nursing home in 2018.
Walter is survived by partner Tannis Strukoff; his children Debbie and Ken Dudar; Ken and Shelley Chernoff; Maxine and Larry McArthur, Linda Nicoll, & Karen and Richard King. He is survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren.
